Advanced Studies in Collaboration and Dispute Resolution, Real Estate Development, and Urban Design

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning offers advanced studies in collaboration and dispute resolution, real estate development, and urban design. Each area of advanced study consists of a minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework. These courses are taken as part of a student's degree program through the Department.

Advanced Studies in Collaboration and Dispute Resolution
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning offers coursework for Advanced Studies in Collaboration and Dispute Resolution which provides an opportunity for graduate students in urban and regional planning to develop expertise useful to moving public policy communities toward consensus and at helping stakeholders resolve impasse. Skills covered include bargaining, negotiation, facilitation, mediation, and the design of programs for consensus building, all oriented toward the creation and implementation of plans and public policies.

Students are required to complete a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours of collaboration and dispute resolution related coursework as part of their advanced studies, as shown below.

Advanced Studies in Real Estate Development
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, in cooperation with the College of Business, offers coursework in Advanced Studies in Real Estate Development which provides an opportunity for graduate students in urban and regional planning or real estate to acquire additional coursework related to the real estate development process. Urban planners need to have extensive knowledge of real estate development in order to adequately and efficiently regulate and work with developers. In turn, developers must be able to operate in an environment in which land use and environmental planning and regulation are critical to the success of their projects. Together, planners and developers require a joint understanding of the real estate development process and the role that planning plays in shaping that process.

Advanced Studies in Urban Design
The Department offers coursework in Advanced Studies in Urban Design that prepares urban and regional planning graduate students to be conversant in both design and planning languages and to be able to devise, implement and communicate physical plans and policy to a diverse group of stakeholders. Courses provide students with instruction in the history and theory of urban design, visualization techniques, and physical planning skills and application.

Students are required to complete a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours of urban design related coursework as part of their advanced studies, as shown below.
