Certificate Programs
The Economics Department offers an undergraduate Certificate in Markets and Institutions and participates in a program offering an undergraduate Certificate in Political Economy offered by the DeVoe L. Moore Center.
Certificate in Markets and Institutions
The certificate program is designed for undergraduate students in all disciplines across the University, not just those in economics, who seek a greater understanding of the importance of institutional arrangements, rules, and customs in determining a nation’s wealth, the distribution of that wealth, and its rate of growth. It allows students to focus on market decision processes in more depth than the minor in economics allows but without the more advanced theoretical and statistical requirements of the major.
Admission to the program requires completion of ECO 2013, Principles of Macroeconomics, and ECO 2023, Principles of Microeconomics, each with a grade of C or better and an overall GPA of 2.5 or better. Award of the certificate requires that students complete four courses selected from the list below, including ECO 3004, Debating Economic Issues, which serves as the capstone course for the program.
ECO3622 Growth of the American Economy
ECS3600 Economics of Native Americans
ECP3451 Economics and the Law
ECO3933 Special Topics: “Public Policy & the Quality of Life”
ECO4504 Public Sector Economics
ECO3130 Free to Choose
ECO3004 Debating Economic Issues (Capstone)
ECO4132 Economics of Compassion
ECO3131 Market Ethics
ECO3303 History of Economic Ideas
Interested students should review the program description and contact the Program Director, Dr. Joe Calhoun, 260 Bellamy Building,jcalhoun@fsu.edu, for more information. The completed application form may be submitted to Dr. Calhoun in paper copy or by e-mail.
