Assistant Professor
Frank Heiland obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His research is in Economic Demography, a specialization that uses the rational choice framework and econometric techniques to analyze demographic processes including the determinants and consequences of fertility, health, aging, and migration. Economic Demography is an emerging area of economics that has significant overlap with more traditional fields such as Labor Economics and draws on research in related disciplines including sociology and epidemiology. Frank Heiland has contributed to knowledge of the determinants of child wellbeing, fertility, retirement, obesity, and migration. He has published on the early retirement rules of Social Security and their effect on labor supply and benefit claiming behavior, life-cycle models of optimal retirement, the effects of fertility and parental relationship status and transitions on child health and attainment, and on the role of peers in the rise of obesity among Americans. Dr. Heiland has received research support from the National Institutes of Health and the Social Security Administration.
