Overview of Post-Program Job Placement

Graduates of the FSU Applied Masters Program of Economics are strong competitors in business-oriented and other practical, non-academic, job markets. After successfully completing the program, students find that their knowledge and skills are substantially greater than those of undergraduate economics majors, and rival those of MBA graduates in the pursuit of first-time job placement. The FSU Applied Masters Program in Economics is unique in that it extends economics education beyond its traditional form and focuses on applying economics in a practical or business setting.

Beyond the educational value of the curriculum, the Applied Program offers students the essential networking opportunities that have come from developing close relationships with classmates and professors.

Salaries

Salaries differ substantially between different starting jobs. Normally, the starting salaries are substantially above what the student could earn with a bachelors degree. In addition the Masters degree provides opportunities for students to move up in a company faster than a person without such a degree. Unfortunately we are not able to systematically collect data on our graduates' salaries, thus we cannot provide detailed statistics on starting salaries of our students. However, the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) estimates the following median salaries for economists for 2004:

  • The median beginning salary for an economist with a bachelors degree-$40,000
  • The median beginning salary for an economist with a masters degree-$50,000
  • The median salary for an economist with a bachelors degree-$75,000
  • The median salary for an economist with a masters degree-$90,000
The survey done by NABE is limited to members, and thus has a limited participation, especially for the bachelor's degree. Thus the difference between a bachelor's degree and a Masters degree is probably understated in the above numbers. However, even using their numbers one can observe a starting differential of $10,000 that increases over time.
