These requirements apply to students entering the University in
Fall 2002 or later. Students majoring in Applied Economics must also satisfy the
University degree requirements for graduation.
The Applied
Economics major is a limited access program. Admission
to the major requires completion of at least 52 credit hours
of college courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better, including
ECO 2013, Principles of Macroeconomics, with a grade of C or
better
(C- is not acceptable) and ECO 2023, Principles of Microeconomics,
with a grade of C or better (C- is not acceptable). The major
in Applied
Economics requires 39 hours of course work, including 12
hours of supporting coursework in other departments, plus completion
of a minor in a discipline related to economics or a second major.
Students intending full-time employment immediately after receipt
of the baccalaureate degree are encouraged to choose the Applied
Economics major. Students who are more interested in a problem-solving
approach to economics may also prefer the Applied
Economics major.
Students majoring in Applied
Economics may simultaneously complete
the requirements for the Economics
major by including ECO 4101,
Intermediate Microeconomic Theory; ECO 4203, Intermediate Macroeconomic
Theory; and ECO 4421, Introduction to Econometrics, among their
electives.
Students must earn a C- or better in all economics courses used
to satisfy major requirements (C or better in ECO 2013 and ECO
2023) and maintain an overall GPA of 2.00 in economics and supporting
courses.
The Applied
Economics major requires completion of the following
courses:
Principles
To be completed before declaring major. A total of 6 credit hours.
- ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics (Grade of C or better)
- ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics (Grade of C or better)
Core Courses
For a total of 9 credit hours, at least one (1) per term until
all are completed.
- ECO 3223 Financial Markets, the Banking System and Monetary
Policy
- ECO 3104 Applied Microeconomic Analysis [Statistics is
prerequisite]
- ECO 4431 Applied Economic Forecasting [Statistics is prerequisite]
Supporting Courses
For a total of 12 credit hours.
- MAC 1105 College Algebra
- Includes precalculus. Substitutes:
MAC 1140 or 1141.
MAC 2311, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I or MAC 2233, Calculus for Buisness, is recommended
- ACG 2021 Introduction to Financial Accounting
- One of the following:
- STA 2122 Introduction to Applied Statistics (recommended),
or
- STA 4321 Introduction to Mathematical Statistics (recommended),
or
- STA 2023 Fundamental Business Statistics
- One of the following:
- ACG 2071 Introduction to Managerial Accounting, or
- FIN 3403 Financial Management of the Firm
Economics Elective Courses
Completion of an additional 12 hours of upper division economics
elective courses with prefixes ECO, ECP, or ECS. Applied
Economics
majors are encouraged to seek an internship placement. (See
Internship for more information.) A maximum of 3 hours of credit
in internship courses (ECO 4922 and
ECO 4944)
may be used to satisfy the elective requirements for the Applied
Economics major.
Minor or Second Major
Students majoring in Applied Economics must also complete a minor
in a field related to economics
or a second major. (Other minors may be approved at the discretion
of the Undergraduate Director.) The requirements for a minor are
determined by the department
in which the minor is taken. Minors typically require 12-18 hours
of credit.
Computer Competency
Students majoring in Applied Economics must satisfy the University's computer
competency requirement by completing ECO 4431 with a grade of C- or better.
