The following are requirements for students entering the program
prior to Fall 2002. All other students should consult
the current requirements
for the Economics major or the Applied
Economics major.
Requirements prior to Fall 2002:
Economics Major
The ECONOMICS major is a limited access program. Admission to
the major requires completion of at least 52 credit hours of college
courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better, including ECO
2013, Principles of Macroeconomics, with a grade of C or better
(C- is not acceptable) and ECO 2023, Principles of Microeconomics,
with a grade of C or better (C- is not acceptable). The major in
ECONOMICS requires 39 hours of course work, including 9 hours of
supporting coursework in other departments, plus completion of
a minor or a second major in a discipline related to economics.
Students intending to pursue graduate study in law, business,
economics, or other social sciences are encouraged to choose the
ECONOMICS major. Students who are more interested in economic theory
and the analytical approach to economics may also prefer the ECONOMICS
major. Students majoring in ECONOMICS may simultaneously complete
the requirements for the APPLIED ECONOMICS major by including ECO
3104, Applied Microeconomics, and ECO 4431, Economic Forecasting,
among their electives.
The ECONOMICS major requires completion of the following courses:
Principles
6 credit hours to be completed before declaring the major.
- ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics (Grade of C or better)
- ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics (Grade of C or better)
Core
At least one (1) course per term until completed for a total of
9 credit hours.
- ECO 3223 Financial Markets, the Banking System and Monetary
Policy
- ECO 4101 Intermediate Microeconomic Theory
- ECO 4203 Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory [ECO 3223 is
prerequisite]

For a total of 9 credit hours.
- MAC 1105 College Algebra
- Includes precalculus. Substitutes:
MAC 1104, 1140, or 1141. MAC 1102 is not a substitute.

Economics Electives
Completion of an additional 15 hours of upper division economics
elective courses with prefixes ECO, ECP, or ECS, including at least
two courses at the 4000 level and at least two courses chosen from
a single subject area within economics.

ECO 3933 (Special Topics) can sometimes be counted toward an appropriate
subject area with approval of the Undergraduate Director.
Minor or Second Major
Students majoring in ECONOMICS must also complete a minor or a
second major in a field related to economics. (Other minors or
second majors may be approved at the discretion of the Undergraduate
Director.) The requirements for a minor are determined by the department
in which the minor is taken. Minors typically require 12-18 hours
of credit.
Applied Economics Major
The APPLIED ECONOMICS major is a limited access program. Admission
to the major requires completion of at least 52 credit hours of
college courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better, including
ECO 2013, Principles of Macroeconomics, with a grade of C or better
(C- is not acceptable) and ECO 2023, Principles of Microeconomics,
with a grade of C or better (C- is not acceptable). The major in
APPLIED ECONOMICS requires 42 hours of course work, including 15
hours of supporting coursework in other departments, plus completion
of a minor or a second major in a discipline related to economics.
Students intending full-time employment immediately after receipt
of the baccalaureate degree are encouraged to choose the APPLIED
ECONOMICS major. Students who are more interested in a problem-solving
approach to economics may also prefer the APPLIED ECONOMICS major.
Students majoring in APPLIED ECONOMICS may simultaneously complete
the requirements for the ECONOMICS major by including ECO 4101,
Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, and ECO 4203, Intermediate Macroeconomic
Theory, among their electives.
The APPLIED ECONOMICS major requires completion of the following

Economics Elective Courses
Completion of an additional 12 hours of upper division economics
elective courses with prefixes ECO, ECP, or ECS. APPLIED ECONOMICS
majors are encouraged to seek an internship placement. Students
participating in the internship program earn up to 6 hours of elective
credit by completing the requirements for ECO 4922 and ECO 4944.
