This is a discussion-centered workshop that utilizes clips from popular movies as a springboard for student learning. It will provide you with many film examples that you can use in the classroom to illustrate economic concepts and make them come alive for your students.
Attendees will learn how to teach through film clips without sacrificing core content. This workshop will also provide you with some exciting and innovative ideas that will make your class more interesting and, at the same time enhance your ability to get important concepts across to your students. This workshop will energize your creativity as a teacher.
About the Workshop Leader
Dirk Mateer has been teaching economics for more than 15 years and he is currently a Senior Lecturer at Penn State University where he regularly teaches sections of over 300 students. His most recent project is a workbook entitled Economics at the Movies, which will be released in the principles of economics market in 2005. Prior to arriving at Penn State, he was a full professor at Grove City College. Dr. Mateer earned his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1991. Before that he was a high school mathematics and science teacher. His areas of expertise include economic education, sports economics, public choice, and experimental economics.
